Mapping and Orienteering in the Snow| Saturday, February 1st| 9-3pm| Jason Hicks | Jack Creek Preserve | $20
This is a beginner course on using a compass to avoid getting lost while recreating in the wilderness. Participants will learn about establishing directional bearing on a compass, reading USGS topo maps, turning angles to create hiking route, measuring distance by walking (and snowshoe) pacing, and discovering the difference between UTM coordinates vs. latitude/longitude location systems. If time permits, we will add GPS reading to compare with hand-held compass directional results. We will use the information learned in the classroom in a series of outdoor orienteering exercises/routes using our compasses and snowshoes!
